Gianni Savelli

Alisei is the latest album by Gianni Savelli and his ensemble Media Res, arriving nine years after its predecessor, Magellano. True to the Roman saxophonist’s aesthetic vision, this is a conceptual album centered around the themes of winds, the sea, and the journey, charting new courses and embracing the following discoveries.
The music on this album is defined by its strong melodic orientation, with themes carefully developed through arrangements that exhibit meticulous attention to detail. The compositions unfold through a dynamic interplay between trumpet and saxophone, engaging in an ongoing dialogue, while the rhythm section sustains an underlying tension—propelling the music forward with a soft yet insistent drive.
Savelli’s artistry is not about bold, vibrant colors or dramatic contrasts. His is a jazz that remains poised and refined, never excessive yet never subdued. The interplay between Savelli and trumpeter Flavio Sigurtà is particularly compelling—Sigurtà more than capably steps into the role once held by Aldo Bassi, a historic member of Media Res who passed away prematurely. One of the six tracks on the album is dedicated to him in tribute.
The interwoven lines of saxophone and trumpet unfold over gently undulating backdrops, never turbulent, hinting at an ultra-light rock influence while evoking landscapes and telling stories through their eloquent phrasing. In their interaction, one might hear echoes—albeit with due proportion—of the classic rapport between Benny Golson and Art Farmer, if such a bold comparison may be entertained.
Meanwhile, Enrico Zanisi enriches the conversation, adding precision and emphasis before launching into concise yet sparkling solos, always imbued with elegance and subtle brilliance.
Two of the tracks feature a brass orchestra, expertly guided under the capable direction of the bandleader, adding further depth and dimension to the album’s sonic palette.
A Carefully Crafted Work, Where Nothing Is Left to Chance
Alisei stands as another significant chapter in Gianni Savelli’s modest but carefully curated discography. When he chooses to release an album under his own name, he allows himself all the time necessary to create a meticulously refined work in every detail. Nothing is left to chance.
Even the improvisations, while spontaneous, are contained within a carefully structured framework, enhancing and completing the overall picture rather than disrupting it.
Lastly, it is worth noting that the album sounds excellent, offering a pleasing and immersive listening experience—a quality that should never be taken for granted.
